The problem

Kenyan educators were stitching together five or more tools to run a single course—video host, payments, email, certificates, and a student portal. No platform combined KES-native payments, multi-role access, and the flexibility to sell courses and digital products side by side.

The client need

Owned infrastructure for educators to build courses, manage cohorts, sell ebooks, issue verifiable certificates, and monetise knowledge—without third-party LMS lock-in.

What I built

Solo end-to-end build: architecture, frontend, Django REST API, payments, real-time features, CI/CD, and test coverage. Deployed on Vercel and Render with GitHub Actions, Playwright, and Sentry.

Multi-role platform

  • Four isolated roles—Student, Instructor, Admin, Ebook Buyer—with scoped dashboards and JWT auth across 70+ routes
  • Cohort calendar (65KB+ TypeScript) for multi-run courses, content release rules, live sessions, and QA deadlines
  • Landing page wizard—instructors publish /lp/[slug] pages from the platform
  • Admin dashboard—users, earnings, and full transaction ledger

Payments, content & realtime

  • KES-native Paystack + Upstash Redis with webhook verification and race-condition-safe enrollment
  • Token-gated ebook delivery with download caps and Gmail SMTP receipts (no account required)
  • Automated certificate issuance with publicly verifiable unique IDs
  • WebSocket notifications across all roles

Impact

4 user roles · 70+ routes · 0 LMS dependencies—full creator-economy infrastructure, built and owned end to end for African educators.
